Food Or Supplements Which Cut Cancer Risk?
People  know that nutritional supplements are increasingly popular in these days to prevent the emergence of various diseases, including cancer. Did they already understand about the benefits and disadvantages of this supplement?
An expert from the University of Texas says that people needs to educate themselves and find out when these products can be used to reduce the risk of cancer.
"Researchers today are still not sure whether minerals, herbs and other plants that consumed in pill form, capsules, tablets or syrup can actually prevent the emergence of cancer," said Sally Scroggs, health education manager at the Cancer Prevention Center, University of Texas MD Anderson Medical Center.
Based on Women's Health Study and the Physicians' Health Study II, Vitamin E and C, for example, can not prevent cancer. The findings of several other studies say that some supplements may actually increase cancer risk by affecting the balance of nutrients in the body.
"If you eat lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, you must get nutrients, like fiber, vitamins and minerals, and substances that is needed by your body to reduce the risk of diseases like cancer," Scroggs said.
Bear in mind that the only pill supplements may not be able to replace the benefits of healthy foods. Scroggs advised to consume lots of foods that contain cancer-fighting substances, such as beta-carotene, selenium, lycopene, resveratrol, and vitamins A, C and E.
She also explained that there are some situations that make the supplements have benefits for health, especially for those who lack adequate nutrition due to allergies, genetic or chronic diseases.
These conditions include pregnant or lactating women: they are at risk of vitamin D deficiency or osteoporosis, and those at risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency, including those aged 50 years or more, and vegetarians who consume no animal products.
Scroggs concludes that if you are considering taking supplements, you should consult with your doctor or nutritionist.
